World No. 1 Test bowler Jasprit Bumrah created history on Saturday, January 4, by becoming the first Indian bowler to take 32 wickets in a Test series played away from home. The 31-year-old fast bowler, who is leading India in the ongoing fifth Test against Australia at Sydney Cricket Ground, achieved the feat by dismissing Marnus Labuschagne for 2 runs in the morning session of the 2nd day’s play. Bumrah has 32 wickets to his name in five Tests of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia.

Before Bumrah, the record of taking the most wickets for India in Test series away from home was in the name of former captain and legendary spinner Bishan Singh Bedi. Bedi finished the 1977-78 Test series in Australia with a total of 31 wickets in five matches. Bumrah had equalled Bedi’s record on Friday by accounting for the dismissal of Australian opener Usman Khawaja.

The left-handed batter was caught in the second slip by KL Rahul for 2 runs on the last ball of the day’s play.

Most wickets in a Test series for India away from home

  • Jasprit Bumrah – 32* (vs Australia, 2024-25)
  • Bishan Singh Bedi – 31 (vs Australia, 1977-78)
  • Bhagwath Chandrasekhar – 28 (vs Australia, 1977-78)
  • Subhash Gupte – 26 (vs West Indies, 1952-53)
  • Kapil Dev – 25 (vs Australia, 1991-92)

By taking his second wicket of the ongoing match at Sydney Cricket Ground, Bumrah has also equalled Harbhajan Singh’s record of taking the most wickets in a Test series between India and Australia. During the 2001 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which was played in India, Harbhajan dismissed 32 Aussie batters in three matches.

One more wicket in the ongoing match will help Bumrah break Harbhajan’s 24-year-old record and take No. 1 wicket in the elite list.

The overall record for taking the most wickets in a Test series for India is in the name of former spinner Bhagwath Chandrasekhar. During the India-England Test series played at home in 1972-73, Bhagwath accounted for the dismissal of 35 batters. Bumrah needs four more wickets in Sydney to leapfrog him and take the No. 1 position.

In the ongoing fifth Test against Australia, before taking two wickets, Bumrah impressed with his batting as well and, with the help of three fours and one six, hammered 22 runs from 17 balls as a No. 10 batter. He added 20 wickets for the ninth wicket with Prasidh Krishna (3) and 17 runs for the 10th wicket with Mohammed Siraj (3) to take India’s first innings total of 185 runs in 72.2 overs.
