Star Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah will not play in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The 31-year-old cricketer from Ahmedabad was ruled out of the eight-team ICC event on Tuesday night. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took to X to share a press release and confirmed the development.
“Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy due to a lower back injury. The Men’s Selection Committee has named Harshit Rana as Bumrah’s replacement,” BCCI stated in a release.
Bumrah last played a 50-over match for India in the ODI World Cup 2023 final against Australia on November 19, 2023, and his last competitive match was against the Baggy Greens at the Sydney Cricket Ground from January 3-5, 2025. In the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, Bumrah didn’t bowl in the second innings due to a back spasm.
Despite doubts related to his fitness, Bumrah was named in India’s provisional squad on January 18, but on Tuesday, he was ruled out.
In addition to Bumrah, young opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal has also been left out of India’s 15-member squad for the Champions Trophy, which will be played from February 19 to March 9 across three venues in Pakistan and one in Dubai.
Jaiswal has been replaced in the Rohit Sharma-led squad by spinner Varun Chakaravarthy. Chakaravarthy made his ODI debut for India on February 9 at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack and picked up one wicket in his quota of 10 overs.
“Team India have also named Varun Chakaravarthy in the squad. The spinner will replace Yashasvi Jaiswal who was initially named in the provisional squad,” the release added.
In addition to the two changes to the provisional squad, the BCCI has named three non-travelling substitutes in the form of Jaiswal, fast bowler Mohammed Siraj, and all-rounder Shivam Dube.
