Chris Martin’s Jasprit Bumrah tributes in the Coldplay concert in Mumbai have made the Indian vice-captain ‘smile’ and feel very ‘special’.
Indian Test vice-captain and ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah said on Monday that Coldplay and its lead singer Chris Martin’s consecutive tributes to him during their Mumbai concerts were ‘special’ and ‘made him smile’.
Martin stopped the concert at the DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai, for the second time in as many days. This time, the band put up a clip of Bumrah’s iconic yorker to dismiss Ollie Pope on the massive screen, prompting huge crowd cheers.
“This made me smile! Incredible vibe at the @coldplay concert in Mumbai (from what I’ve seen here) and even more special to be mentioned ✨” Bumrah wrote on X, sharing a video of the moment.
In the clip from Sunday (January 19), Martin can be heard saying: “With respect and love to Jasprit, No.1 in the world. We hope that we can send love to Jasprit by showing a small clip of India destroying England. Watch this.”
On Saturday, the opening night of the Mumbai stop for the band, Martin had joked about Bumrah being backstage at the event. He clarified that ‘lie’ on Sunday, saying: “This is very serious. Yesterday, during our show, we said that Jasprit Burmah had asked us to stop the show because he was backstage and wanted to bowl at me. This was not true. It was a lie. I’m so sorry.”
Bumrah has been out of cricketing action and the public eye since the first week of January when he picked up a back stress injury in the fifth Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. According to India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar, he has been advised five weeks of rest from bowling.
“Bumrah has been told to off-load for five weeks after and he won’t be available for the first two ODIs against England,” Agarkar had said. “We are waiting on his fitness and will know his status in early February from the medical team. We’ll probably find out a bit more around that time, what exactly, and with regards to what his medical condition is, I’m sure BCCI might just put something out, from the physio itself.”
Media reports have suggested that he might be able to make a comeback in India’s third home ODI against England, on February 12. India are hoping that he can maintain his fitness for the 2025 Champions Trophy, where India will play their first match on February 20 against Bangladesh.
