Star Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is all set to start his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. According to a report in Times of India on Sunday, the 31-year-old pacer, who last played for India in the fifth Test against Australia at Sydney Cricket Ground from January 3-5, underwent scans recently for his back injury under the watch of BCCI’s medical team. It has been reported that the reports were internally discussed, and now the seamer is likely to start physical activity (like gym, light bowling) in the next 24 to 48 hours.

The BCCI is expected to play a waiting game with Bumrah before finally taking a call on his participation in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which starts on February 19. The teams are allowed to make changes to their provisional squad for the eight-team ICC event till February 11.

“Even if there is a 1% chance, the BCCI is likely to wait. They did the same with Hardik Pandya as they waited for close to two weeks before getting Prasidh Krishna as a replacement. Even when Shubman Gill was down with dengue, they didn’t have any thoughts of looking for a replacement. Yes, those two incidents happened during the campaign, but the approach with Bumrah could well be no different. This is just the deadline to submit the squad, and they could approach the Event Technical Committee at a later stage to seek a replacement if he fails to regain fitness,” a source close to developments was quoted as saying by TOI.

Bumrah played all five Test matches for India in Australia and accounted for the dismissal of 32 batters. He didn’t come out to bowl in the second innings of the fifth Test in Sydney due to a back spasm, and upon returning to India, he was asked to offload for five weeks.

Bumrah last played a 50-over match for India in the ODI World Cup 2023 final against Australia at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on November 19, 2023, and picked up two wickets. His last white-ball match for Men in Blue was in the T20 World Cup 2024 final against South Africa at Kensington Oval in Barbados on June 29, 2024.
