ICC chairman Jay Shah was present at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday (March 4) to watch the first semifinal of the Champions Trophy 2025 between India and Australia. In the high-voltage match played between the two finalists of the 2023 ODI World Cup, India managed to chase down the target of 265 runs in 48.1 overs for the loss of six wickets to book a place in the final of the Champions Trophy for the record-extending fifth time.
Australian captain Steve Smith won the toss and opted to bat first, but despite his 73-run knock and Alex Carey’s 61 from 57 balls, the Men in Yellow could only manage to score 264 runs in 49.3 overs for the loss of 10 wickets. While Smith was clean bowled by Mohammed Shami on the fourth ball of the 37th over, a direct throw by Shreyas Iyer ended Carey’s knock on the first ball of the 48th over.
After Iyer’s throw led to Carey’s dismissal in the match, Shah was seen celebrating from the stands. A video of Jay Shah’s animated reaction after Australia lost its eighth wicket of the match in the form of Carey is now going viral on the internet.
Before returning back to the dugout, Carey hammered eight fours and one six.
It was his second straight half-century in the Champions Trophy 2025. During Australia’s first match of the tournament against England in Lahore on February 22, the left-handed wicketkeeper-batter scored 69 runs from 63 balls and added 146 runs for the fifth wicket with Josh Inglis (120 not out).
Final in Dubai on March 9
