Australian wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis entered his name in the history books on Saturday, February 22, by equalling former Indian opener Virender Sehwag’s record of scoring the fastest century in the ICC Champions Trophy. The 29-year-old stumper, who was born in Leeds, scored a 77-ball century for the Steve Smith-led side against England on Saturday during the fourth match of the Champions Trophy 2025, which was played at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

Sehwag also scored a 77-ball century for India during the 2002 Champions Trophy match played against England in Colombo on September 22, 2002.

In the list of batters with the fastest centuries in the Champions Trophy, Inglis and Sehwag are followed by Shikhar Dhawan, who scored an 80-ball century against South Africa in 2013, and Sri Lanka’s Tillakaratne Dilshan, who crossed the 100-run mark in 87 balls against South Africa during the match played in Centurion on September 22, 2009.

Inglis looked in great touch with the bat on Saturday, and during his stay at the crease, he faced a total of 86 balls, and with the help of 8 fours and 6 sixes, scored 120 runs. He added 146 runs for the fifth wicket with Alex Carey (69) and an unbeaten 74 runs for the sixth wicket with Glenn Maxwell (32 off 15 balls) to help Australia chase down the target of 352 runs in 47.3 overs and win the match by five wickets.

The century against England on Saturday was Inglis’s first century in ODI cricket, and it helped him break multiple batting records. The member of Australia’s 2023 ODI World Cup-winning squad became the fourth Australian batter after Glenn Maxwell, Shane Watson, and David Warner to score a century in all three formats of the game and only the second Aussie after Maxwell to score a century in all three formats of the game away from home.

Inglis has scored one T20I century in India, one Test century in Sri Lanka (on debut), and one ODI century in Pakistan. Maxwell, on the other hand, has scored a century in all three formats of the game in India.

Inglis’ knock on Saturday helped Australia chase down the highest total in Champions Trophy history, and it also sealed the Aussies’ first win in the Champions Trophy since the 2009 edition.
