Spencer Johnson was added to Australia’s Champions Trophy 2025 squad on Wednesday (February 12) as a replacement for star pacer Mitchell Starc, who pulled out of the eight-team tournament starting February 19 due to personal reasons. In his first match for Australia after getting a call-up for Champions Trophy, Johnson helped Australia get off to a flying start in the first ODI against Sri Lanka which is currently underway at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
On the fifth ball of the match, the left-arm pacer from Adelaide accounted for the dismissal of Pathum Nissanka. The Sri Lankan opener was caught behind by wicketkeeper Alex Carey for four runs from five balls.
After helping Aussies get off to a dream start in the match, Johnson picked up his second wicket on the second ball of his fourth over. Jake Fraser-McGurk, who was also added to Australia’s Champions Trophy 2025 squad on Wednesday, completed the catch of Kamindu Mendis.
Apart from Johnson, Sean Abbott has also picked up one wicket for Australia in the ongoing match. The member of Australia’s 2023 ODI World Cup-winning squad got Janith Liyanage caught by captain Steve Smith on the third ball of the 15th over.
