Indian batter Karun Nair continued his purple patch with the willow in hand as he smashed an incredible unbeaten 88 runs off just 44 deliveries on Thursday in the semifinal of the Vijay Hazare Trophy between Vidarbha and Maharashtra.
Nair’s latest innings comes on the back of a scintillating run of form as the batter recorded scores of an unbeaten 122 against Rajasthan, 112 against Uttar Pradesh, an unbeaten 11 against Tamil Nadu, an unbeaten 163 against Chandigarh, 44 not out against Chhattisgarh, and another unbeaten 112 against Jammu and Kashmir.
The 33-year-old took his tally at the premier List A tournament to a mind-boggling 752 runs in 8 games at an average of 752 in his previous seven innings.
And with the final Indian squad for the flagship ICC Champions Trophy 2025 yet to be announced, Nair has thrown his hat in contention for a spot on the team flight.
Nair scaled the half-century milestone against Maharashtra in 35 deliveries, before amping up his game to finish off with 88 runs in just half as many balls to help his side to a mammoth total of 380 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in the stipulated 50 overs.
Maharashtra’s decision to bowl first after winning the toss backfired as Vidarbha openers Dhruv Shorey and Yash Rathod were on song and capitalised on their fine touch to rack up a ton each.
Rathod top-scored with 116 runs while Shorey added 114 to his side’s scoreboard before Nair’s whirlwind finish. Wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma added 51 runs to the tally, while Shubam Dubey remained unbeaten at 5 alongside skipper Nair to see out the innings.
