Gujarat Titans added a couple of points to their tally to take a lead at the top of the IPL 2025 points table with a 39-run victory over defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens on Monday.
GT posted a total of 198/3 as skipper Shubman Gill led the way with a 90-run knock and was supported well by a Sai Sudharsan half-century, while Jos Buttler chipped in with 41 runs off his willow. Gujarat went on to limit the hosts to a score of 159/8 to pull ahead at the standings summit as Rashid Khan and Prasidh Krishna scalped two wickets apiece while Ajinkya Rahane’s fifty went in vain.
Kolkata won the toss and skipper Ajinkya Rahane opted to field first as GT’s usual suspects, Sai Sudharsan and captain Shubman Gill, opened the innings for the visitors. GT got off to a sparkling start as both batters notched up half-centuries in their 114-run stand for the first wicket. Sudharsan made a fine 52 off 36 deliveries, comprising 6 fours and a maximum before he fell to KKR all-rounder Andre Russel, with Rahmanullah Gurbaz picking up the catch of the southpaw.
English star Jos Buttler came out to replace his teammate and accompanied Gill as the duo added another fifty-plus stand before the skipper fell to Vaibhav Arora after having added 90 runs in 55 deliveries, as Rinku Singh demonstrated safe pair of hands to send the batter back to the hut after a remarkable innings.
Rahul Tewatia was scalped for a duck by Harshit Rana as Shahrukh Khan came out to bat in place of the southpaw. The Indian added 11 runs off 5 balls while Buttler remained unbeaten on 41 off 23 to take GT to 198 for the loss of 3 wickets in 20 overs.
Gujarat had early joy with the ball as Mohammed Shami struck in the first over, as he caught Gurbaz plumb in front of the wicket. Rahane and Sunil Narine steadied the chase with a 41-run stand for the second wicket before the Windies maverick fell prey to Rashid Khan.
Venkatesh Iyer chipped in with 14 runs off 19 deliveries before Sai Kishore scalped the southpaw while Rahane held on steady to bring up his half-century at the other end. However, Washington Sundar intervened and sent the KKR skipper back to the hut for 50 off 36 as he was stumped out by Buttler behind the wicket.
Rashid doubled his kitty with the removal of Andre Russell for 21 runs off 15 as KKR looked to have lost their way to the big target. Prasidh Krishna piled further misery on the home side with a caught and bowled to scalp Ramandeep Singh for a solitary run, before striking yet again in the same over with the removal of Moeen Ali for a duck.
Rinku Singh fell to Ishant Sharma for 17 off 14 in the final over after the game was essentially over as a contest.
