Star India and Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper-batter on Wednesday cleanly plotted Yashasvi Jaiswal’s dismissal during the match against the Rajasthan Royals, as the latter fell into his trap and lost his wicket in what eventually turned out to be a Super Over thriller.
Just before the second delivery of the 14th over, Rahul, stationed behind the stumps, suggested that Kuldeep Yadav keep the delivery straight on the line to Jaiswal, while pointing out Mitchell Starc’s position at long-on.
As expected, Jaiswal came down the track looking for a six, just to mistime it and hand a catch to Starc, bringing his innings to an end. Watch the video here:
After Jaiswal was dismissed in the 14th over, Sanju Samson and Nitish Rana added 49 runs for the third wicket. Meanwhile, the former retired hurt and the latter lost his wicket in the 18th over as the match kept swinging like a pendulum.
Chasing 189, Jaiswal (51 off 37) and Rana (51 off 28) had the Royals cruising, but Delhi’s bowlers turned the tide with a roaring late surge, tying the match at 188/4.
Desperate for a victory to reignite their campaign, Jaiswal came out all guns blazing as he clobbered two sixes off Mukesh Kumar before dismantling Mitchell Starc with two fours and a towering maximum.
Jaiswal, however, looked invincible until Axar Patel turned once more to his trusted match-winner Kuldeep (1/33 in 4 overs). The move worked. Delhi’s standout wrist-spinner struck gold.
Earlier, Delhi’s momentum faltered as Jake Fraser-McGurk’s lean patch persisted. The Aussie lofted a simple catch to Jaiswal at mid-off in the fourth over, gifting Rajasthan Royals a breakthrough.
Run outs came back to haunt Delhi again as a mix-up between Abishek Porel and the in-form Karun Nair (0) resulted in the latter’s dismissal, halting the Capitals’ charge.
The Royals’ bowlers tightened the noose during the middle overs, drying up the fours and building persistent pressure.
Yet, Porel found a steady ally in seasoned Rahul. The latter brought a sense of calm amidst a storm, easing the pressure with two towering sixes, one launched down the ground off Tushar Deshpande in the 7th.
DC play their next game against the Gujarat Titans on Saturday, April 19, in Ahmedabad.
