Virat Kohli was left puzzled by the third umpire’s decision regarding an appeal against Mitchell Marsh’s dismissal on the second day of the pink ball Test in Adelaide for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series on Friday.

During the replays, it was seen that Ravichandran Ashwin’s delivery had two spikes, one from the ball hitting the bat and pad simultaneously. The cameras were also not able to make a clear distinction between the two resulting in the decision not being changed due to the lack of conclusive evidence to overturn the call.

Kohli was not exactly pleased as he asked the on-field official and asked why the same call was not taken during the first Test in Perth.

“KL’s was the same in Perth. One on the pad and one on the spikes,” Kohli asked the umpire and the audio was caught on the stump mic.

Rahul during the first innings of the Perth Test, suffered a controversial dismissal where he was caught behind. Replays had shown that the spike in the snick-o-metre would have been that of the bat and pad coming into contact, but the third umpire at the time did not take this into account and overturned the on-field official’s call.

Ashwin got his man later on with an edge to the keeper which Marsh did not refer to the third umpire. Replays showed that the ball did not get the edge at that time, as India finally got away with a decision in their favour.

The hosts have the upper hand with Travis Head’s sensational knock, scoring 140 runs to give them a first-innings lead. The onus will now be on the Indian team to get back into the contest with some quick wickets followed by some runs on the board.

The pink ball proved to be a tough challenge for the Indian batters in the first innings, with Mitchell Starc leading the Aussie charge, taking a six-wicket haul to bundle India out for 180 runs.

Kohli will certainly be in the spotlight as many would hope that he can deliver yet another solid performance to get India back into the contest.
