Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) skipper Rishabh Pant teased his Chennai Super Kings (CSK) counterpart, MS Dhoni, for his sensational run-out in the teams’ clash in IPL 2025 on Monday.
In a video shared by LSG on their social media accounts after the match, Dhoni can be seen trying to be humble about his under-arm direct hit at the non-striker’s end of Abdul Samad — a moment that has gone viral on social media. Dhoni tells Pant that he just saw the stumps and went for it without caring for the outcome, in reply to which Pant says, ‘Lage ja rahi hai na’ (Yeah, but you rarely miss!).
Watch the wholesome interaction here:
Pant has idolised Dhoni for years and the duo’s performances decided the match at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. Samad was batting at 20 (11) when he tried to steal a bye in the final over and got caught at the non-striker’s end by Dhoni throw. Had he faced a couple more deliveries and scored a boundary or two, it could have changed the result of the match which ended in a narrow, last-over loss for LSG.
Apart from the run-out, Dhoni also got a stumping and a catch, which took his overall dismissals in the IPL past 200 — making him the first wicketkeeper in the tournament to go past that mark. Dhoni was also praised for his captaincy
“The best thing that happened tonight was MS Dhoni’s captaincy. It was phenomenal. He read the situation, he adjusted to the conditions, he bowled his spinners in tandem, exactly like MS Dhoni has done his entire career. He got them on, they rushed through the overs, they changed the pace of the game, they used the surface, they picked up wickets. I just think his experience out there on the field was defining tonight as captain,” former Australia captain Michael Clarke said on Star Sports.
Pant, on the other hand, top-scored for LSG with 63 runs but took 49 deliveries for it, and his strike-rate of 128.57 ended up doing more harm than good to his team. His captaincy was also sub-par as decisions to not bowl spin to Dhoni and using Shardul Thakur for the 19th over backfired badly at LSG.
