India beat England by a record margin of 150 runs on Sunday, February 2, to win the fifth and final T20I of the five-match series played at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After being invited to bat first by the English team, the hosts rode on Abhishek Sharma’s record-breaking 135 off 54 balls to post a total of 247 runs on the board for the loss of nine wickets, and then the 24-year-old cricketer from Amritsar picked up two wickets as well in his one over to help India bowl out England for just 97 in 10.3 overs. Apart from Abhishek, Shivam Dube and Varun Chakaravarthy also dismissed two English batters each, and Mohammed Shami finished the match with figures of 3 for 25 in 2.3 overs.

The win over England in the last match of the T20I series helped India seal the home assignment with a scoreline of 4-1.

During the fifth T20I, Indian players broke multiple records. Here’s a look:

  • Abhishek Sharma becomes the sixth Indian batter after Rohit Sharma (5), Suryakumar Yadav (4), Sanju Samson (3), KL Rahul (2), and Tilak Varma (2) to score multiple centuries in T20Is.
  • Abhishek now holds the record for scoring the most runs in a T20I match for India. He broke Shubman Gill’s record of 126 runs from 63 balls against New Zealand (in Ahmedabad on February 1, 2023).
  • Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Tilak Varma hammered 95 runs in the first six overs of the match to help India register its highest powerplay score in T20Is.
  • Abhishek Sharma scored 58 runs in the first six overs of India’s innings, which helped him surpass Yashasvi Jaiswal’s record of scoring the most runs by an Indian batter in the Powerplay of a T20I match.
  • Abhishek crossed the 50-run mark in 17 balls and the 100-run mark in 37 balls, which helped him record the second fastest fifty and second fastest century in T20Is for Men in Blue.
  • Abhishek completed his century on the first ball of the 11th over. It is the earliest any player has reached a century in a T20I innings. He broke former South African wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock’s record, who reached there on the second ball of the 11th over during a match played against West Indies in Centurion in 2023.
  • During his stay at the crease on Sunday, Abhishek hammered 13 sixes, which is the most by an Indian batter in a T20I match.
  • Sanju Samson became the third Indian batter after Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal to hit a six on the first ball of a T20I match. He opened his account with a six off Jofra Archer’s bowling.
  • The two wickets on Sunday helped Varun Chakaravarthy break his own record of taking most wickets in a bilateral T20I series for India. Chakaravarthy finished the five-match series against England with a total of 14 wickets to his name.
  • Abhishek finished the T20I series with 279 runs to his name in five matches. He broke Virat Kohli’s record of scoring the most runs in a bilateral T20I series played between India and England. During the five-match T20I series between India and England in March 2021, Kohli amassed a total of 231 runs.
  • England suffered a defeat by more than 100 runs for the first time in T20Is on Sunday.
  • India bowled out England for 97 runs in just 10.3 overs. It is England’s shortest ever innings in the 148 years of the history of international cricket.
  • 33 runs were scored in the first over across both innings (16 by India & 17 by England), which is the joint second most in a T20I in a full 20-over match.
  • England pacer Jofra Archer conceded 14 sixes in the T20I series against England, which is the joint second most maximums conceded by a bowler in a T20I series behind Lungi Ngidi of South Africa (16 vs West Indies in 2021).
