Australia were aiming to become the first ever cricket team to hold all three world titles at the same time during the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup co-hosted by West Indies and USA earlier this year. However, a defeat to eventual champions India in a Super 8 clash drew curtains to their campaign and the impact of it was such that wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade started contemplating retirement.

And on Tuesday, he announced retirement from international cricket and will join the coaching staff of the men’s team for their upcoming T20I series with Pakistan at home.

“It (retirement) probably hit home after we lost against India. That was when I really sat down and reflected that that was probably the end of my career. That was an emotional moment,” Wade told cricket.com.au.

Having made his international debut in 2011, Wade went on to play 36 Tests, 97 ODIs and 92 T20Is for Australia. The arrival of Josh Inglis also pushed him towards making the decision, Wade said.

“The time was right for Ingo (Inglis) to come in. You can see what he’s done in the last (few months that) he’s been in the team as the No.1 ‘keeper. He was certainly ready to come in and take that role. They’re looking for maybe someone who can bat more top to middle order now as well and that suits him really well,” he said.

The 36-year-old also confirmed he won’t be taking part in the next season of the Indian Premier League. He currently represents former champions Gujarat Titans.

“I’m doing the ILT20 which will be straight after the BBL. I’m doing the (Abu Dhabi) T10, which leads straight into BBL. So, I’m going over to Dubai at the end of this month. I’ve got some Tassie (Tasmania) one-dayers that I’ve been playing as well. I won’t be in the IPL,” he said.
