Virat Kohli engineered another successful chase during the ongoing Champions Trophy that guided India to a four-wicket win over Australia and into the final of the ICC tournament in Dubai on Tuesday. It was a typical Kohli innings comprising plenty of singles as he scored 84 off 98 to put India in a comfortable spot after they lost opener Shubman Gill early in the chase of 265.

Kohli looked set for his second century of the ongoing tournament but an attempt to go aerial proved to be his undoing as Adam Zampa had the former India captain hole out to long-on in the 43rd over.

The disappointment at having missed out on seeing through the chase and a century was apparent on Kohli’s face. And on his batting partner KL Rahul’s face as well.

As a dejected Kohli walked past him, Rahul told his teammate there was no need to play the big shot since he was taking the risks.

Main maar raha tha na (I was hitting)!” said Rahul as Kohli made his way back to the Indian dressing room.

During the course of his innings, Kohli broke batting legend Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most 50-plus scores in ICC ODI tournaments.

The 36-year-old Kohli has now 24 50-plus scores to his name which is one more than the previous record set by Tendulkar.

Prior to that, the former captain also became India’s leading run-getter in Champions Trophy history. He went past the Shikhar Dhawan’s tally of 701 and has now 746 runs in 16 innings to his name which is the second-most in the competition’s history after Chris Gayle’s 791.

In the second semifinal, South Africa and New Zealand will square off in Lahore on Wednesday. The winner will take on India in Dubai in the title clash.
