Steve Smith gets hit in the Adelaide nets
Australia dealt with an injury scare after Steve Smith was hit while batting in the nets in Adelaide on Tuesday. The former Australian captain was taking throwdowns from teammate Marnus Labuschagne when the ball bounced and hit his fingers.
As reported by RevSportz, Smith walked off the nets after being attended by the physio. The nature of the injury is yet to be known. However, it has deepened Australia’s injury crisis, especially after the hosts lost Josh Hazlewood for the second Test match of the series which begins Friday.
In another video shared by RevSportz, Labuschagne could be seen sitting down on the ground in discomfort. He was reportedly hit by a rising ball from bowling coach Daniel Vettori. However, the batter got up and continued batting.
Josh Hazlewood ruled out
The Aussies have already been stung by the injury of Josh Hazlewood who has been ruled out of the second Test due to a side strain. According to a statement by Cricket Australia, it is a ‘low-grade left side injury’ which will also put his availability for the rest of the series in doubt. The last time India played a pink-ball Test in Australian soil, Hazlewood was the pick of the Aussie bowlers with India being bowled out for just 36 runs and the right-arm pacer finishing with figures of 5/8 in his five overs.
Australia have named two uncapped bowlers on their squad to cover for Hazlewood. Sean Abbot and Brendan Doggett make their way to the squad. In the starting 11, Scott Boland could be gearing up to make a return to Test cricket after playing his last Test in July 2023 in Adelaide.
