South Africa’s 26-year-old right-handed wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Breetzke created history on Monday, February 10, by becoming the first cricketer in the world to score 150 on ODI debut. Breetzke opened for the Proteas in the second match of the ongoing Tri-Nation ODI Series in Pakistan on Monday against New Zealand, and during his 148-ball stay at the crease in Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, scored 150 runs with the help of 11 fours and five sixes.

Before Breetzke, the record of most runs on ODI debut was held by former West Indies opening batter Desmond Haynes. Haynes made his ODI debut for the Men in Maroon against Australia in St. John’s on February 22, 1978, and with the help of 16 fours and 2 sixes, scored 148 runs from 136 balls.

Highest score on ODI debut

  • Matthew Breetzke (South Africa) – 150 vs New Zealand in 2025
  • Desmond Haynes (West Indies) – 148 vs Australia in 1978
  • Rahmanullah Gurbaz (Afghanistan) – 127 vs Ireland in 2021
  • Mark Chapman (Hong Kong) – 124* vs UAE in 2015
  • Colin Ingram (South Africa) – 124 vs Zimbabwe in 2010

Breetzke is the fourth South African and overall 20th batter to score a century on ODI debut. Colin Ingram was the first one from South Africa to achieve the special feat. He scored 124 runs from 126 balls in the match played against Zimbabwe in Bloemfontein on October 15, 2010. South Africa’s ODI captain Temba Bavuma scored 113 runs from 123 balls in his first 50-over match against Ireland in Benoni on September 25, 2016, and Reeza Hendricks amassed a total of 102 runs from 89 balls against Sri Lanka in Pallekele on August 5, 2018.

  • Reeza Hendricks: 102 vs Sri Lanka in 2018

Thanks to Breetzke’s memorable knock on ODI debut, South Africa posted a total of 304 runs for the loss of six wickets against New Zealand. Apart from the 26-year-old cricketer from Gqeberha, Wiaan Mulder scored 61 runs for South Africa on Monday. The duo added 131 runs for the fourth wicket.

For New Zealand, which came into the match after securing a 78-run win over Pakistan in the first match of the Tri-Nation series on Saturday at Gaddafi Stadium, pacers Matt Henry and William O’Rourke picked up two wickets each, and one South African batter was sent back to the pavilion by Michael Bracewell, who conceded 43 runs in his quota of 10 overs.

If New Zealand manages to chase down the target of 305 runs in Lahore, then it will confirm its place in the final of the Tri-Nation ODI series.
