It was a debut to remember for Vaishnavi Sharma as she ran riot, picking up a fifer and a hat-trick against Malaysia in the group A clash at Kuala Lumpur in the ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.
The 19-year-old was born in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, and is also the first cricketer to play from the Chambal region. She is also the Jagmohan Dalmiya Trophy for the Best Woman Cricketer in the Junior Domestic season in 2022-23. A report by NDTV also suggests that the all-rounder took up the sport at just five years old.
She was not picked to start India’s prior games in the tournament but now had come in place of Sonam Yadav after their previous game against the West Indies.
According to an interview on BSTV MP-CG, she came from the Tansen Cricket Academy in Gwalior where she had put in the hours to bring her to the stage she is at presently.
“Whenever she is in Gwalior she comes to the academy where she puts in seven hours daily, three in the morning and the four in the evening. I believe that she has worked hard and now she is the first from around here to play in the World Cup,” her coach shared.
The Malaysian batters had no idea just what had hit them. She had been asked to bowl in the eighth over and did not look back since. Reacting to her spell, she reflected on her journey and also mentioned how senior international Radha Yadav was her idol.
“It’s a dream debut. This was a dream to take a hat-trick and a fifer on debut. The journey was good; it had some ups and downs, but the dream is complete. As for my idol, it’s Radha Yadav in the women’s team and Jadeja sir from the women’s team,” she said in the mid-innings interview.
“I was told on the first day that I would get to play. We have a lot of left-armers, and everyone is so supportive,’ she added.
She even shared how she had visualised moments like these in anticipation of getting a change with the ball.
The hat-trick was the standout moment, I had dreamt about this last night and visualised how I would have gotten wickets.
“It was a simple plan; I wanted to bowl according to the conditions and the batter. This means to check if the batters are shuffling or moving around the crease and things like that. It was a simple plan to attack the stump line,” she concluded.
