Ayush Mhatre entered his name in the history books on Sunday (April 20) by becoming the youngest cricketer to make an IPL debut for Chennai Super Kings. He played his first-ever IPL match for the Chennai-based franchise against the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai at the age of 17 years and 278 days. In his maiden IPL game, the right-handed batter from Virar faced 15 balls and, with the help of four fours and two sixes, scored 32 runs. He added 41 runs for the second wicket with Shaik Rasheed before being sent back to the pavilion by Deepak Chahar in the seventh over.
During his short stay at the crease, Mhatre impressed everyone with his batting, and during the second half of the match, he completed one brilliant catch near the ropes as well.
After the conclusion of the MI-CSK match at Wankhede Stadium, which the Hardik Pandya-led side won by 9 wickets, Mhatre met his idol Rohit Sharma. In a video shared by MI on X, Mhatre can be seen shaking hands with Rohit, who appreciated his performance by saying, “Mhatre, well played yaar.”
When Suryakumar Yadav told Rohit that Mhatre came to meet you, the 37-year-old right-handed batter said, “We played together in Ranji Trophy.”
Mhatre was part of Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy 2024-25 squad, and Rohit also played one game for the most successful team in Ranji Trophy history last season, and during that, Mhatre shared the dressing room with Rohit.
After the conclusion of the Mumbai-Jammu Kashmir match, in which Mumbai suffered a shocking defeat, Mhatre took to Instagram to post a picture of him with Rohit and captioned it, “Started playing cricket by watching him bat on television to sharing a dressing room with my idol was such an unreal moment. Lots of learning to take forward.”
