Shubman Gill top-scored for India in the first ODI played against England at VCA Stadium in Nagpur on Thursday (February 6). The 25-year-old right-handed batter came out to bat at No. 3 and, with the help of 14 fours, scored 87 runs from 96 balls. It was his superb show with the bat after early dismissals of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma that helped India chase down the target of 250 runs in 38.4 overs for the loss of six wickets.
Gill, who is India’s vice-captain in the white-ball format of the game, has a batting average of 58.90 in ODIs, and he is on the cusp of becoming the fastest batter in the world to score 2500 runs in ODIs.
Gill will look to maintain his good show with the bat in the second ODI as well, which is set to take place at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Sunday (February 9). Ahead of the second match of the home series, Gill, while speaking to Star Sports, opened up about his batting style in ODIs and said it’s a mix of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
“The way that I play in ODIs is like a mix of Rohit Bhai and Virat Bhai. And when I’m batting with Rohit Bhai, the conversation that we have is always very simple. We look at the wicket, and then we see that sometimes it’s easy for me to target some bowlers and sometimes it’s easy for him to target some bowlers, and I think that awareness is very important,” Gill said on Star Sports.
“And when I’m batting with Virat Bhai, it’s running between the wickets. He likes to run singles, doubles, singles, and doubles. That’s how he likes to be in the game and keep the momentum going. So, I think batting with both of them is a little different, but it’s a lot of fun with both of them,” he added.
In the absence of Kohli, Gill batted at No. 3 for India in the first ODI against England, and it will be interesting to see his batting position in the second match of the series when Virat returns to the playing XI.
