The ICC has announced the quantum of punishment for Mohammed Siraj and Travis Head after the two exchanged words during Adelaide Test.
India fast bowler Mohammed Siraj and Australia batter Travis Head have been punished by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for their heated on-field exchange during the recent Adelaide Test. Siraj, after dismissing Head, gave the Australian a fiery send-off, gesturing him to be on his way back to the dressing room on Day 2 of the pink-ball Test.
Head also had a few words to say to Siraj before walking off the field after a magnificent century that was key to Australia winning the Test by 10 wickets and pulling themselves on level terms with India in the five-match series.
Head though later claimed he was complimenting Siraj for his bowling which the Indian star misunderstood. Siraj rejected the claim.
“Siraj has been penalised 20% of his match fee after being found guilty of breaching article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel which relates to using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon dismissal,” the ICC said in a statement on Monday.
“Head too was sanctioned for breaching Article 2.13 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to the “abuse of a player, player support personnel, umpire or match referee during an international match,” it added.
Both Siraj and Head have been handed a demerit point each on their disciplinary records which is their first offence within the last 24 months.
Both players admitted their respective offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by Match Referee Ranjan Madugalle.
The Test saw India captain Rohit Sharma winning the toss and opting to bat first. However, Mitchell Starc took a six-wicket haul as the tourists were bowled out for 180.
Powered by Head’s 140 off 141, Australia made 337-all out in their reply to take 157-run lead. India fared worse in their second dig and managed 175-all out leaving Australia with a paltry target of 19 runs which they chased 3.2 overs.
The third Test will be held in Brisbane from December 14.
