Former Indian skipper MS Dhoni, who is the most capped player in IPL history, has dropped a big hint about his participation in the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League. Dhoni, who is associated with Chennai Super Kings in the cash-rich league, was expected to call time on his career after the end of IPL 2024, but he didn’t provide an official update about his retirement, which raised the possibility of his participation in the IPL 2025 as well.

All 10 IPL franchises are set to announce their list of retained players for the 2025 edition by October 31, and ahead of that, Dhoni has provided an update about his CSK future. While speaking at a promotional event recently, the 43-year-old wicketkeeper-batter who stepped down from CSK’s captaincy ahead of IPL 2024 said, “I just want to enjoy whatever last few years of cricket I can play.”

“When you play cricket like a professional sport, it becomes difficult to enjoy it just like a game. That’s what I want to do. It’s not easy. The emotions keep coming; the commitments are there. I want to enjoy the game for the next few years,” he added.

During the event, Dhoni, who had won five IPL titles with CSK as captain, also cleared his intention to continue playing in the IPL.

“I have to keep myself fit for nine months so that I can play two and a half months of IPL. You need to plan it out, but at the same time chill a bit,” said Dhoni.

Dhoni was last seen in action for CSK on May 19 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at M Chinnaswamy Stadium. RCB defeated CSK in that match to become the fourth team to qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs.

CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan also confirmed Dhoni’s participation in the IPL 2025 to Cribuzz by saying, “When he is ready, what else (do) we want? We are happy.”

According to Viswanathan, Dhoni will call CSK owner N Srinivasan in the coming days to finalise the list of players to be retained by the Chennai-based franchise.

It has been reported that CSK will retain Dhoni for Rs 4 crore. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is set to be CSK’s first retention, followed by captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana, who made his IPL debut in 2022 for CSK.
