Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s fandom defies age, region, religion, nationality and even sometimes reason. The former Indian captain has led the men in Blue to the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 50-over Cricket World Cup and yet has largely stayed away from social media to interact with his legions of supporters.

In a recent interview, Dhoni opened up on his view on social media and how managers have in the past told him to leverage his popularity for public relations.

“I have never been a big fan of Social Media – throughout I have had different managers – I started playing in 2004, Twitter (Now X) almost got popular slightly later on then Instagram came – all the managers are like we should some PR, build this, build that so I looked at all and told the same answer, if I play good cricket, I don’t need PR,” Dhoni was quoted as saying on ‘Tread Talks’.

MSD also opened up on why he would never pick his friend and former teammate from the Indian team and Chennai Super Kings, Suresh Raina, as his bike-riding partner, especially if he spots a truck on the road.

“In the sense, you know, to put it very simply, in a motorcycle, unlike a car, you know, whether it’s your fault or not, if there’s an accident or if you fall, you will get hurt and most of the athletes, they are very worried about their joints, especially knees and elbows,” Dhoni said.

“Most of the players, they stay away from it. But people who have sat with me on a bike and we have been on a ride, I can pick one who I would not, you know, take as a companion and that would be Suresh Raina because, you know, he starts moving. So, if he sees a truck, you know, getting close, he starts to move along,” he added.

Dhoni will again be back on the cricket field in the Indian Premier League at the age of 43 after Chennai Super Kings retained him as an uncapped player for Rs 4 crore for the upcoming IPL 2025 season.
