Chennai Super Kings retained the legendary wicketkeeper-batter, MS Dhoni as an uncapped player for IPL 2025
Chennai Super Kings’ retention list ended the suspense over MS Dhoni’s IPL future as the legendary wicketkeeper-batter was retained by the franchise as an uncapped player. The Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council reinstated a rule allowing teams to classify players as uncapped if they haven’t represented India in over five years. The amendment let CSK keep Dhoni, for INR 4 crore, along with the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja and Matheesha Pathirana.
Dhoni may have been retained for one more season but how long he shall play, nobody knows. In a conversation with former batter Ambati Rayudu, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan suggested that the former Indian captain aims to end his career at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium, which the legend said himself after winning the IPL 2021 title.
“As far as Mahi bhai is concerned, you know he keeps everything to himself. It comes out at the last moment only. Knowing the passion he has for CSK, and also knowing the following he has, and he also mentioned in one of the interviews that he’ll play his last game in Chennai, we’re hoping that he will continue as far as CSK is concerned,” Viswanathan told Rayudu on Provoke TV.
“As long as MS wants to play, the doors are open. Knowing him, his commitment, and his dedication, I’m sure he’ll always make the right decision,” he added.
Last month while speaking at a promotional event, the 43-year-old wicketkeeper-batter revealed that he would like to enjoy whatever ‘last few years’ he can play.
“I just want to enjoy whatever last few years of cricket I can play,” Dhoni said at the event.
“When you play cricket like a professional sport, it becomes difficult to enjoy it just like a game. That’s what I want to do. It’s not easy. The emotions keep coming; the commitments are there. I want to enjoy the game for the next few years,” he added.
