India’s one-man army in BGT 2024-25, Jasprit Bumrah is only behind Kapil Dev in Test wickets in Australia.
Allan Border believes the ‘remarkable’ Jaspirt Bumrah is on par with West Indies great Malcolm Marshall for his relentlessness and the ability to take wickets in almost every spell. The Australia legend said he has ‘never seen anyone’ like the Indian vice-captain, lauding him for completing 50 Test wickets Down Under.
Bumrah reached the milestone on Sunday when he dismissed Mitchell Starc in Australia’s first innings at the Gabba. He’s now only behind Kapil Dev (51) on the list of Indians for the record. Starc’s was Bumrah’s sixth wicket of the innings. He ended the spell at 6/76 to cap off the 12th five-wicket of his career and third in Australia.
“I can’t properly compare him to Marshall because I never faced Bumrah but just watching him there is not much (between them). Bumrah is remarkable. He rarely bowls a spell without taking a wicket. He is different,” Border told the News Corp. “Because of his action, he lets the ball go later. And he smiles all the time. He can beat a batsman three times in a row and smile each time. I have never seen anyone like him,” he said.
Only Dev has more five-wicket hauls in Australia (five) among pacers while Anil Kumble sits second in the list with four fifers on Australian soil.
Carrying the inexperienced Indian attack, Bumrah has picked up 18 scalps with two matches and possibly another innings to go in the series. It puts him over halfway to topping Harbhajan Singh’s record of 32 wickets in a Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.
Earlier in the day, the other half of the legendary Border-Gavaskar Trophy title, Sunil Gavaskar, had also lauded the 31-year-old.
“He is a world-class bowler,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports. “Even a batter who has scored 150 can’t feel safe in front of him. He bowled a peach of a delivery to (Travis) Head.”
Despite Bumrah’s six-fer, Australia put on a mammoth 445 in the first innings. On the rain-marred third day, they took complete control of the Test by reducing India to 51/4 after just 17 overs.
