The fans were left awestricken when Nitish Reddy reverse scooped Scott Boland’s length delivery over the slips for a stunning maximum.
The extra bounce on offer at the Adelaide Oval troubled the Indian batters so much that the visitors suffered yet another collapse down under. After a resilient 69-run partnership between KL Rahul and Shubman Gill for the second wicket, the Australian pacers sneaked in and ran through India’s batting order. Mitchell Starc bagged a six-wicket haul after lunch while Scott Boland and Pat Cummins backed him with two wickets apiece as India were bowled out for 180 in 44.1 overs.
Amid another batting horror show in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Nitish Kumar Reddy showcased a courageous approach in Adelaide. The Andhra all-rounder shifted gears and smashed the Aussie pacers all around the park. He smashed three sixes and as many fours during his 54-ball stay at the crease. However, the fans were left awestruck when he reverse-scooped Scott Boland’s length delivery over the slips for a stunning maximum.
It was the second ball of the 42nd over when Reddy changed his stance to play the shot and connected so well that the ball landed out of the fence. Commentator Mark Nicholas was taken by surprise as he said, “Unbelievable. It has to go a mile away and it has. It’s a big boundary out there.”
Reddy mustered 42 off 53 before holing out a Mitchell Starc delivery – clocking 141.5 kph – to Travis Head at mid-off.
The Australian pace trio of Starc, Pat Cummins and Scott Boland got more out of the pink ball in the second session. Starc sizzled with his trademark inswingers to remove R Ashwin and Harshit Rana while Cummins used the short ball effectively.
Rohit Sharma (3 off 23), batting in the middle order after six years, was trapped leg before wicket by Boland with a ball that jagged back from a length. Rishabh Pant (21 off 35) played his aggressive game before falling to a sharp bouncer from Cummins.
Reddy (42 off 54), who impressed on his debut in Perth, added valuable runs to the total alongside number eight Ashwin (22 off 22), who replaced Washington Sundar in the playing eleven.
