Nitish Kumar Reddy’s father, Mutyala, met legendary Indian batter and former captain Sunil Gavaskar on Sunday, December 28, a day after his 21-year-old son scored a memorable century for Rohit Sharma-led Team India in the ongoing Boxing Day Test against Australia at Melbourne Cricket Ground. In a video that is taking the internet by storm, Mutyala, who left his government job to focus on his son’s cricket career, can be seen touching Gavaskar’s feet and hugging him.

Mutyala was accompanied by his wife and daughter, and the duo also touched Gavaskar’s feet.

Nitish’s parents were present at the iconic MCG on Saturday, when, after coming out to bat at No. 8 for India, he scored his maiden Test century. Reddy, who made his red-ball debut for India in Perth last month, crossed the 100-run mark on the 171st ball he faced. He hammered 10 fours and one six to reach the milestone.

Nitish’s father was seen cheering for him in the stands and getting emotional as well on Saturday, and several videos of that heartwarming moment went viral on the internet.

Gavaskar, who was the first batter to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket, also gave a standing ovation to Nitish after he became the third-youngest Indian batter to score a Test century in Australia on the third day of the Boxing Day Test.

Gavaskar spoke to Nitish’s parents, and during the conversation, he got emotional as well.

Top scorer for India

Nitish was the last Indian batter to get out in the first innings of the fourth Test. He scored 114 runs from 189 balls with the help of 11 fours and one six. Reddy added 127 runs for the 8th wicket with Washington Sundar (50) to help India not only successfully avoid the follow-on but also dash Australia’s hopes of taking a big first innings lead.

Reddy, who earned a place in the Indian team after his impressive performances in IPL 2024 for Sunrisers Hyderabad, has scored a total of 293 runs in the ongoing series. Only Travis Head of Australia has scored more runs than him in the 2024-25 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Reddy has top-scored for India in four of the seven innings played so far.
