Sri Lanka’s Charith Asalanka, who led his side to a historic bilateral series win over India in August last year, was named as captain of the ICC’s ODI Team of the Year 2024.
Four players from Sri Lanka and three cricketers each from Afghanistan and Pakistan managed to find a place in the ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year for 2024, which was released by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday, January 24. Saim Ayub, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Haris Rauf represented the Pakistani team, whereas Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Allah Ghazanfar from Afghanistan also managed to make the cut. Four Sri Lankan players are Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis, Charith Asalanka, and Wanindu Hasaranga, and the remaining one player is from the West Indies in the form of Sherfane Rutherford.
Asalanka, who led Sri Lanka to a historic series win over India in August 2024, has been named as captain of the ICC ODI team of the year 2024.
With 742 runs to his name in 17 matches, Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis topped the run-getters list in 2024, and he was followed by Nissanka and Asalanka, who scored 694 and 605 runs, respectively.
Hasaranga finished as the highest ODI wicket-taker in 2024. The Sri Lankan all-rounder accounted for the dismissal of 26 batters in 10 matches. Ghazanfar dismissed 21 batters in 11 matches for Afghanistan, and Omarzai finished with 17 wickets in 14 matches. In addition to his bowling, Omarzai scored 417 runs with the bat, which is why he is also in the race to win the ICC ODI Player of the Year award.
Saim Ayub scored 515 runs in nine ODIs for Pakistan in 2024, and Rauf picked up 13 wickets in eight matches. He played a big role in Men in Green’s ODI series win in Australia in November 2024. Left-arm pacer Shaheen finished the year 2024 with 15 wickets in six matches for the Mohammad Rizwan-led side.
India played only three ODIs in 2024, which is why no Indian player could manage to secure a place in the ICC ODI Team of the Year 2024. In addition to India, Australia, South Africa, England, and New Zealand also are without any representative.
