Star Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who played in Delhi’s Ranji Trophy Elite Group D match against Saurashtra in Rajkot last week, will miss the team’s last group stage match against Railways. Delhi will face Railways at Arun Jaitley Stadium from January 30 to February 2. The 27-year-old stumper was not named in Delhi’s squad announced on Monday, January 27.
Pant, who has led Delhi’s Ranji Trophy team in the past, wasn’t able to do much with the bat in the match against Saurashtra, which his side lost by 10 wickets inside two days. After coming out to bat at No. 5 in the first innings, Pant scored 1 run from 10 balls before being sent back to the pavilion by Dharmendrasinh Jadeja, and in the second innings, he scored 17 runs from 26 balls as a No. 6 batter.
Star India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who took the field for Saurashtra in that match, dismissed Pant in the second innings and finished the match with a total of 12 wickets, which includes 7 in the second.
Even if Pant is not available for Delhi in the last group match, the national capital-based team will be boosted by the return of star Indian batter and former all-format captain Virat Kohli.
The 36-year-old right-handed batter was named in Delhi’s squad on Monday. Kohli last played a Ranji Trophy match for Delhi against Uttar Pradesh at Ghaziabad’s Mohan Nagar in 2012.
He is expected to train with the Delhi Ranji Trophy squad from Tuesday.
For Kohli’s first Ranji Trophy match in 13 years, the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) has made special arrangements. DDCA will open three stands at the Ambedkar Stadium End.
“Gate Nos. 7, 15, and 16 will be open to the public. We will arrange for drinking water, and the toilets will be clean and hygienic. Come and enjoy the match. Of course, there will be security checks before allowing the public to enter,” DDCA secretary Ashok Sharma was quoted as saying by PTI.
Delhi’s squad: Ayush Badoni (C), Virat Kohli, Pranav Rajvanshi (WK), Sanat Sangwan, Arpit Rana, Mayank Gusain, Shivam Sharma, Sumit Mathur, Vansh Bedi (WK), Money Grewal, Harsh Tyagi, Siddhant Sharma, Navdeep Saini, Yash Dhull, Gagan Vats, Jonty Sidhu, Himmat Singh, Vaibhav Kandpal, Rahul Gehlot, Jitesh Singh.
No Rohit & Jaiswal for Mumbai
Defending champions Mumbai will miss the services of India captain Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shreyas Iyer in their final Elite Group A match against Meghalaya, which starts on Thursday.
All three players featured in the sixth round of the Elite Group A match for Mumbai against Jammu and Kashmir at the Sharad Pawar Academy Ground in BKC, where the visitors recorded a commanding five-wicket victory.
