Shubman Gill on Saturday was named as India’s vice-captain for the upcoming three-match ODI series against England as well as the 2025 edition of the ICC Champions Trophy.

Indian men’s cricket team captain Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar on Saturday, January 18, announced India’s squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which is set to be played from February 19 to March 9 across three venues in Pakistan and one in Dubai. Rohit will lead the Men in Blue in the eight-team ICC event, which is making a comeback after eight years, and star opening batter Shubman Gill was named as his deputy.

Gill was India’s vice-captain in the last ODI series against Sri Lanka as well. There were reports that Jasprit Bumrah or Hardik Pandya could be named as India’s vice-captain, but the 25-year-old right-handed batter retained his post.

As many as 10 players from the ODI World Cup 2023 squad are picked for the Champions Trophy as well. Yashasvi Jaiswal is the only new face in India’s ODI team. The 23-year-old left-handed batter hasn’t played a 50-over match for India so far. T20 World Cup 2024 winners Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, and Rishabh Pant will also play for India in the Champions Trophy, and in place of fast bowler Mohammed Siraj, all-rounder Washington Sundar was picked by the selectors, keeping the Dubai conditions in mind.

India will play all its matches of the ICC Champions Trophy in Dubai, and the final match will also be played at Dubai International Cricket Stadium if the Rohit Sharma-led side qualifies for it.
