Prithvi Shaw had a solid start to Mumbai’s chase at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday but was dismissed by Tripuresh Singh in only the second over.
India batter Prithvi Shaw is facing scrutiny after failing to score in the 2024 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) final. Donning a Mumbai shirt, Prithvi added a mere 10 runs in six deliveries against Madhya Pradesh. The 25-year-old had a solid start to Mumbai’s chase at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday but was dismissed by Tripuresh Singh in only the second over.
Rahul Batham took the catch to seal Prithvi’s wicket and give Madhya Pradesh the breakthrough. The poor show from the young batter has now resulted in a severe backlash from fans on social media.

While Prithvi Shaw failed to produce a stellar batting display for Mumbai, it didn’t stop the Shreyas Iyer-led side from winning the SMAT 2024 title. They were tasked to chase a total of 174/8 in Bengaluru. Rajat Patidar had held the innings together for Madhya Pradesh with an unbeaten 81. Subhranshu Senapati was the next-best scorer for the side with 23 runs in 17 deliveries.
During Mumbai’s chase, the veteran duo of Ajinkya Rahane and Suryakumar Yadav stepped up with crucial knocks after the quick dismissals of Prithvi Shaw and Shreyas Iyer. Towards the closing moments of the epic final, Suryansh Shedge scored a quick-fire 15-ball 36 to seal a five-wicket victory for Mumbai. This was Mumbai’s second-ever SMAT title. They had won the tournament for the first time in 2022.
While Prithvi Shaw closed out the season with the SMAT 2024 trophy, 2024 has been a tough year for the young batter. Once described as the ‘next Sachin Tendulkar’ by ICC, Prithvi’s form has dropped off massively in recent times. He finished the domestic tournament without scoring a single fifty. The 25-year-old’s poor performances also saw him go unsold at the IPL 2025 auction earlier this year.
