Nitish Reddy reveals what his celebration meant
Nitish Reddy stamped his authority in Test cricket with a gutsy hundred at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, on the third day of the ongoing Boxing Day Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. India were six down for 191 in response to Australia’s first-innings score of 474 when Reddy walked out to bat and went on to bat for the rest of the day. After forging a record partnership with Washington Sundar for the eighth wicket, the Andhra batter notched up his maiden Test hundred and celebrated it in a unique way.
After reaching fifty, Reddy enacted famous Telugu actor Allu Arjun’s move from the blockbuster movie, ‘Pushpa’. But the century celebration was different. Reddy took off his helmet, stamped his bat on the ground and put the helmet on the bat while pointing his finger towards the sky.
While fans on social media thought that the young batter struck the pose of another Telugu superstar Prabhas from his film ‘Salaar’, it was not. Speaking to Star Sports after the fourth day’s play, Reddy revealed what his celebration meant.
“The 50 celebration, you all know that. When I came to Australia, I wanted to do this celebration because of the mentality I want to carry in the centre, that’s how I want to be,” Reddy told Star Sports.
“And that hundred, the 100 celebration was, I wanted to stamp the bat over there and there is an Indian flag symbol on the helmet, right. So, I wanted to keep my helmet. Like I want to feel like I stamped my Indian flag on this ground and salute, just did the salute to the helmet,” he added.
Nitish was the last Indian batter to get out in the first innings, and before his dismissal, he hammered 114 runs with the help of 11 fours and one six. He became the third-youngest Indian Test centurion in Australia, after Sachin Tendulkar and Rishabh Pant.
