Indian men’s cricket team captain Rohit Sharma on Monday (January 20) was named in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad for the upcoming Elite Group A match against Jammu & Kashmir. 42-time champions Mumbai will face J&K in its sixth match of the ongoing 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season at Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy BKC from January 23 to 26. Rohit is all set to open for Mumbai in his first Ranji Trophy match after November 2015, but the Indian captain will not captain Mumbai. Instead he will play the match under the leadership of Ajinkya Rahane. Rahane, who last played a Test match for India in July 2023 against the West Indies, is Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy captain, and he was retained by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) selectors despite Rohit’s presence.

In addition to Rohit, young Indian opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal was also named in the squad for the must-win match. Jaiswal last played a Ranji Trophy match in 2022. But once again there was no place for Prithvi Shaw. Shaw last played for Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final at M Chinnaswamy Stadium against Madhya Pradesh. He was dropped from the Vijay Hazare Trophy squad after a forgetful show with the bat in the premier domestic T20 tournament.

Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Dube, and Shardul Thakur are other top players who will be seen in action for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy match against Jammu & Kashmir.

Mumbai squad: Ajinkya Rahane (captain), Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ayush Mhatre, Shreyas Iyer, Siddhesh Lad, Shivam Dube, Hardik Tamore (wk), Akash Anand (wk), Tanush Kotian, Shams Mulani, Himanshu Singh, Shardul Thakur, Mohit Awasthi, Sylvester Dsouza, Royston Dias, Karsh Kothari.

Kohli to play Ranji after 12 years

Star Indian batter Virat Kohli is all set to play his first Ranji Trophy game since 2012 after making himself available for Delhi’s Elite Group D match against Railways in Delhi from January 30.

Kohli could not make it for Delhi’s upcoming away clash against Saurashtra, beginning in Rajkot on January 23, due to a neck sprain, but he has communicated to DDCA that he is available for the team’s last league match of the Ranji Trophy.

“Virat has conveyed to DDCA president (Rohan Jaitley) and team management that he is available for the game against Railways,” Delhi head coach Sarandeep Singh told PTI.
