Since making his international debut for India in July 2023, the 23-year-old left-handed batter has scored 1798 runs in 19 Tests and 723 runs in 23 T20Is.
Former England men’s cricket team captain Nasser Hussain has ignored Shubman Gill but included Yashasvi Jaiswal in his next generation’s ‘fab four.’ Since making his international debut for India in July 2023 against the West Indies during a Test match in Roseau, 23-year-old left-handed batter Jaiswal has played 19 Tests and 23 T20Is and has 1798 and 723 runs, respectively, to his name. On Saturday, he earned his maiden India ODI call-up as well for the upcoming three-match ODI series at home against England and ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
According to Hussain, who has donned the hat of an expert and commentator after his retirement from professional cricket, apart from Jaiswal, England’s Harry Brook, Pakistan’s Saim Ayub, and Australia’s Travis Head are the next ‘fab four.’
Head was on fire for Australia in the recently concluded five-match Test series against India. He scored two centuries and one fifty in five matches to finish as the leading run getter and help the Baggy Greens win their first Test series against India in 10 years.
On the other hand, Brook scored more than 1000 runs for England in Test cricket last year, which also includes a triple century in Pakistan, and Ayub has made a big name for himself in all three formats of the game for the Pakistani team.
Speaking about the young Pakistani opener on the Sky Sports podcast, Nasser said, “I’m going to go with Saim Ayub, who I think is a multi-format player. He just had this injury, and it’s uncertain whether he’ll be fit for the Champions Trophy, but he could be a dynamic player at the top of the order for Pakistan across all formats.”
Nasser’s former England teammate Michael Atherton agreed with his two choices—Jaiswal and Brook—but suggested Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis and New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra as the other two possible members of the next ‘Fab Four.’
Mendis has made a memorable start to his cricket career. Last year he equalled Don Bradman’s record of scoring 1000 Test runs in 13 innings. In addition to his heroics in Tests, Mendis has impressed with his performances in Tests and ODIs as well.
As far as Rachin is concerned, the 25-year-old left-handed batter is a regular member of the New Zealand team in all three formats of the game. He scored more than 500 runs in the ODI World Cup 2023 and also played a big role in helping the Kiwis win their first-ever Test series in India last year.
