The Chennai Super Kings’ Head Coach, Stephen Fleming does not intend on wasting any time be it for the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League or shifting their focus for next year.
The five-time champions have endured a disastrous start to the 2025 edition as they languish at the bottom of the points table with just four points in eight games played so far in this season.
“It is hard when you are playing below par to get enthusiastic about staying in the competition, but that is what we must do,” Fleming told the media.
Nonetheless, Fleming remains intent on the franchise looking to learn from this experience to once again turn things around after their 9th place finish in 2022 only for them to go all the way and win it the next year in 2023.
“Nothing will be wasted during this tournament, we will look back at other tournaments that have not gone our way and some of the work we have done at the back end of the tournaments that set us up for wins the following year,” he said.
“We’re realistic about the position that we’re in, but there will be no stone unturned looking for players for next year, combinations for next year and we’ll see it as an opportunity,” he added.
He also emphasised that they do not want to rule things out just yet and want to push on for a spot in the playoffs but reiterated that they would focus on next year should their chances be ruled out beforehand.
Fleming continued, “(It is) not a great opportunity because we want to be at the pointy end of the competition but if it works out that there is no chance of us getting through (to the playoffs), we’ll certainly make the most of it.”
CSK’s batting has been a major concern with their lack of aggression at the top. It took the 17-year-old talent, Ayush Mhatre for the side to find their first boundary in their recent game against Mumbai Indians. But Fleming believes that it a lack of confidence rather than the lack of skill.
“We’re not trying to play a conservative brand of cricket, we’re just lacking a little bit of confidence and we’re just changing personnel through one reason or another,” he said.
