On This Day In 1992: From last-ball thrillers to incredible performances, the rivalry between India and Pakistan has been one of the most intense ones in the history of cricketOne such iconic moment, that took place on this day (March 4) during a 1992 World Cup game between India and Pakistan in Sydney, got etched in the memories of fans.

It was Javed Miandad’s mimicry of Indian wicketkeeper Kiran More that emerged as one of the most iconic moments in the history of India and Pakistan’s fabled rivalry. Known for his sublime batting, Miandad was one of Pakistan’s most reliable figures during his playing days.

While he was known for his majestic performances, fans remember Miandad for his iconic antics on and off the field.

One such iconic incident unfolded during the India-Pakistan fixture in the 1992 World Cup. That match also marked the first World Cup meeting between the two neighbouring nations.

Thanks to Sachin Tendulkar’s unbeaten 54 and Ajay Jadeja’s 46-run knock, India succeeded in posting a fighting total of 216 at the loss of seven wickets.

Pakistan did not enjoy a smooth start to their run chase, losing their opening batter Inzamam-ul-Haq for two runs. It was Aamer Sohail and Javed Miandad who stitched a partnership of 88 runs for the third wicket to weather the storm.

During his knock, Javed Miandad was involved in a heated argument with Kiran More. The Indian wicketkeeper made an appeal on a delivery bowled by Sachin Tendulkar. The ball had gone down the leg side after Miandad missed trying to connect it.

Later, Javed Miandad backed away when Sachin Tendulkar was about to bowl and complained to the umpire about Kiran More’s spat. On the next delivery, Miandad played a shot towards the cover region and tried to take a single but he had to return into his crease as More tried to run him out.

Observing Kiran More’s endeavour to receive the ball, Javed Miandad jumped in the air with his bat up in a bid to make fun of the Indian wicketkeeper appealing behind the stumps. The incident became one of the most memorable ones in cricket history.

Years later, More had disclosed, while commentating during a match, that Miandad was attempting to imitate him and mock him after his continuous appeals.
