On This Day In 1999: Legendary Indian spinner Anil Kumble scripted history by taking all ten wickets in an innings of a Test match against Pakistan on this day (February 7) in 1999. He was the second bowler to achieve the incredible feat. During the 1956 Ashes series, England great Jim Laker dismissed all ten Australian batters in a single innings.
Kumble matched the record in the second game of a home Test series at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium (then Feroz Shah Kotla).
In the fourth innings when Pakistan were chasing a mammoth 420, Kumble picked 10 wickets for 74 runs, bowling 26.3 overs which included as many as nine maidens.
Mohammed Azharuddin won the toss in Delhi and elected to bat first. As most of the Indian batters failed to showcase their A-game, they managed to produce 252 in the first innings. Opener Sadagoppan Ramesh and Azharuddin were standout batters for the hosts, contributing 60 and 67 runs respectively.
Among others, only Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman were able to breach the 30-run mark. Saqlain Mushtaq was the top-performing bowler for Pakistan. He fetched a five-wicket haul while bowling at an economy of 2.62.
Coming to bat on the tricky surface, Pakistan faced a similar batting collapse. Only two of their batters– Shahid Afridi and Saleem Malik– managed a 30-plus score and the team was bundled out for 172. This time, Anil Kumble took four wickets while Harbhajan Singh picked three and Venkatesh Prasad had two under his belt.
The Indian batting unit bounced back in the second innings. With Sadagoppan Ramesh stepping up with a 96-run knock, the hosts started on a promising note. Javagal Srinath missed the half-century by just one run while Sourav Ganguly remained unbeaten at 62. Pakistan’s Saqlain Mushtaq once again claimed five wickets as India were all out for 339.
Saeed Anwer and Shahid Afridi gave Pakistan a positive start, racking up a 100-plus partnership. Anil Kumble drew the first blood with the wicket of Afridi before dismissing Ijaz Ahmed for a golden duck.
Mohammad Yousuf and Saqlain Mushtaq also failed to open their account while Inzamam-ul-Haq, Moin Khan and Mushtaq Ahmed scored in single digits. Wasim Akram finished as their top scorer with 37 runs. Thanks to Kumble’s dominant show, Pakistan were forced to wrap up their innings with 207 runs.
