On this day (February 24) in 2010, Sachin Tendulkar came up with an epic knock to set a new record. Playing against South Africa at the Captain Roop Singh Stadium in Gwalior, Tendulkar produced a historic innings of 200 not out off 147 balls. With this, the Master Blaster shattered the record for the highest individual ODI score. He also became the first player in the history of ODIs to breach the individual 200-run mark in an innings.

Tendulkar’s brilliance with the bat guided India to a resounding 153-run victory against the Proteas in the second ODI. As fans recall a memorable knock of Tendulkar on this day, we look back at the historic innings that came today in 2010.

South Africa struck early in the game, having dismissed Virender Sehwag for nine runs in the fourth over. Sachin Tendulkar and Dinesh Karthik stitched a solid partnership of 194 to bring India back into the contest.

Tendulkar scored his half-century facing 37 balls. While Karthik returned to the dressing room, scoring 79 runs off 85 balls, Tendulkar reached the 100-run mark off 90 balls.

Sachin Tendulkar, eventually, remained unbeaten on 200 helping India to post a mammoth total of 401 at the loss of three wickets. Tendulkar’s historic innings comprised 25 boundaries and three sixes. The Indian legend wrapped up his knock with a strike rate of 136.05. This is the second-fastest of his ODI centuries.

“I’d like to dedicate this double hundred to the people of India who have stood by me no matter what for the last 20 years,” the man of the match Tendulkar had said after the match.

The mammoth target turned out to be quite a challenging one for South Africa as the visitors bundled out for 248. AB de Villiers played a fine knock of 114 not out but it was not enough to secure a victory for the Proteas.

While Sreesanth picked up three wickets, Ashish Nehra, Ravindra Jadeja and Yusuf Pathan earned two scalps each for India in the game. The victory helped India clinch the ODI series.
