On this day (December 19), in 2010, Sachin Tendulkar became the first player in the history of cricket to score 50 Test centuries. Tendulkar achieved this feat during the first Test against South Africa at SuperSport Park in Centurion. Sachin, at the age of 37, also succeeded in crossing the 14,500-run mark in Tests during that game against South Africa.
The Master Blaster had dedicated this record to his late father. “It was his birthday yesterday and I wanted to do something in his honour. I also thank all the well-wishers and fans who have supported me throughout. Just keep supporting me like this and I will continue to perform. I was not chasing any record. I have never run behind records. But I am happy,” Tendulkar had said back then.

In the first innings of the Centurion Test, India managed to post 136. Sachin Tendulkar emerged as India’s highest scorer in the first innings, having played a vital knock of 36 off 34 balls.
The then-India skipper MS Dhoni’s valuable contribution with 33 runs helped India breach the 100-run mark. For South Africa, Morne Morkel claimed a five-wicket haul in the first innings.
South Africa, in response, exhibited brilliant batting and declared their first innings, having reached 620 at the loss of four wickets. Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers scored a century each, while Jacques Kallis hit a double hundred.
Ishant Sharma and Harbhajan Singh bagged two wickets each for the visitors.
In the second innings, India started with a solid opening partnership stitched together by Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir. While Sehwag was the first to be dismissed for 63, Gambhir returned to the dressing room scoring 80 runs.

But Sachin Tendulkar’s brilliance with the bat and MS Dhoni’s terrific half-century went in vain as India failed to clinch a win. South Africa secured a win in the first Test by an innings and 25 runs.
