On this day in 2011: One of the finest batters ever to represent India, Sehwag became just the player, after Sachin Tendulkar, to breach the 200-run mark in an innings in ODI.
On this day (December 8), in 2011, former India cricketer Virender Sehwag achieved a sensational feat. One of the finest batters ever to represent India, Sehwag became just the player, after Sachin Tendulkar, to breach the 200-run mark in an innings in ODI. Tendulkar had scripted this record against South Africa in 2010.
On December 8, 2011, Sehwag played an epic knock of 219 against West Indies at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore. Sehwag’s incredible 149-ball knock comprised 25 boundaries and seven sixes.
Riding on Sehwag’s blistering batting, India went on to win the ODI against the Caribbean side by a comfortable margin of 153 runs.
As the cricket world celebrates one of the most iconic knocks today, we take a look at Virender Sehwag’s majestic batting against West Indies in Indore.
Winning the toss, India decided to bat first and the move paid off. The hosts got off to a flying start, thanks to a solid partnership put up by the opening batters—Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag. While Gambhir returned to the dressing room scoring a quickfire 67 off as many deliveries, Sehwag continued his onslaught.
Virender Sehwag required 69 deliveries to reach the 100-run mark. He went on to up the ante and scored the double hundred facing 140 balls. His innings came to an end in the 47th over with Kieron Pollard picking up the vital wicket of Sehwag.
Suresh Raina’s half century and Virender Sehwag’s power-packed innings enabled India to reach a mammoth total of 418 at the loss of five wickets. This still remains India’s highest ODI total.
Kemar Roach, Andre Russell and Kieron Pollard claimed one wicket each in the game.
The target proved to be a huge one for West Indies who did not have an impressive start to their run chase. West Indies’ opening batter Kieran Powell was the first to be dismissed (seven off five balls) in the second over of the innings.
West Indies’ wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin did offer a fightback with his valiant half century but his superb batting, eventually, went in vain. Ramdin fell four runs short of his century.
West Indies were bowled out for 265. Rahul Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja claimed three wickets each to earn an emphatic win for the hosts.
