On this day in 2015, Chris Gayle produced a record-breaking double century. Playing against Zimbabwe at the Manuka Oval in Canberra, Gayle scored 215 runs off just 147 balls. This is the second-highest individual score by a batsman in the history of World Cups. Overall, this is the fourth-highest score in ODI history.
The West Indies legend breached the 200-run mark facing 138 deliveries. During his innings against Zimbabwe, Gayle hit 16 sixes. This is the second joint-most maximums hit by a batsman in an ODI innings. AB de Villiers and Rohit Sharma also hit 16 sixes each. The record is held by Eoin Morgan who had walloped 17 sixes against Afghanistan in 2019.

Chris Gayle’s sublime innings comprised 10 boundaries and 16 maximums. Marlon Samuels, on the other hand, also succeeded in hitting a century. Samuels ended up remaining unbeaten on 133. West Indies’ innings came to an end on 372 at the loss of two wickets.
Zimbabwe’s run chase got off to a disappointing start with opening batter Regis Chakabva returning to the dressing room scoring two runs. Sean Williams and Craig Ervine offered a fightback with each scoring a half century. But their gritty batting went in vain with Zimbabwe falling short by 73 runs. Jason Holder and Jerome Taylor picked up three wickets each to earn an emphatic win for West Indies.
