On This Day In 2017: Riding on Rohit Sharma’s power-packed innings, India posted a mammoth total of 260 against Sri Lanka.

On this day (December 22), in 2017, Rohit Sharma enthralled the cricket world by hitting a sublime T20I century against Sri Lanka. At the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore, Rohit scored a 35-ball century to script history. It was the joint-second-fastest T20I ton at the time.

The right-handed batter equalled South Africa’s David Miller’s feat. Miller had scored a 35-ball T20I ton against Bangladesh in 2017. Riding on Rohit’s power-packed innings, India posted a mammoth total of 260 at the loss of five wickets against Sri Lanka. The hosts won the fixture by a comfortable margin of 88 runs.

As fans celebrate a memorable batting today, we take a look back at Rohit Sharma’s iconic knock produced on this day in 2017.

Winning the toss, the then Sri Lanka skipper decided to bowl first. India got off to a flying start with their opening pair of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul stitching a solid partnership of 165.

Rohit Sharma, who breached the 100-run mark in 35 balls, was dismissed for 118 off 43 balls. Rohit managed to slam 12 boundaries and 10 sixes during his stay at the crease. His power-packed knock marked the most number of sixes hit by an Indian batsman in a T20I innings.

Dushmantha Chameera picked up the vital wicket of Rohit Sharma in the 13th over. KL Rahul scored 89 off 49 balls. His innings comprised five boundaries and eight maximums.

Later, MS Dhoni scored a quickfire 28 off 21 balls to help India cross the 250-run total. The hosts, eventually, ended their innings at 260/5. For Sri Lanka, Thisara Perera and Nuwan Pradeep bagged two wickets each in the second T20I against India.

Sri Lanka were off to a poor start, losing wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella for 25 in the fifth over. Upul Tharanga made a positive start but missed out on his half-century by three runs. Kusal Perera led the visitors’ charge and scored 77 runs off 37 balls.

Sri Lanka ended their innings at 172. While Yuzvendra Chahal claimed four wickets, Kuldeep Yadav picked a three to guide India to an emphatic victory.
