Team India registered their lowest-ever team total in Test cricket during the 2020-21 Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. The iconic series began with a pink-ball Test at the Adelaide Oval. In the second innings of the match, India were bowled out for 36 runs.
The historic event unfolded four years back on this day (December 19). The then-India captain Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bat first in the day-night fixture. They posted 244 runs, riding on a gritty 72-run knock by Kohli.
The visiting batters, however, failed miserably in the second innings.
For Australia, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood shared nine wickets as India managed to survive only 21.2 overs.
The pitch at Adelaide was expected to assist the quicker bowlers. Nathan Lyon was the lone spinner for Australia, with Mitchell Starc, Cummins and Hazlewood forming a three-man pace attack.
All-rounder Cameron Green and part-time spinner Marnus Labuschagne were also there to provide bowling depth.
While Kohli was India’s top scorer in the first innings, Cheteshwar Pujara showed his mettle and scored 43 runs off 160 balls. Ajinkya Rahane also made a crucial contribution, chipping in with a 42-run knock.
No other Indian batter was able to cross the 20-run mark.
Australia came in to bat on Day 2 and could have produced 191 runs. Captain Tim Paine remained unbeaten at 73 while Marnus Labuschagne added 47 runs to the score.
At that point of the game, India certainly had the upper hand, thanks to their 60-run lead. They, however, had no answer to Australia’s formidable pace attack. Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane who were impressive in the first innings returned with a duck.
Kohli, on the other hand, scored four and Mayank Agarwal was the top performer with nine runs.
Australia had to chase 90 runs to take an early lead in the four-match Test series. Australia lost two wickets but Joe Burns sealed the deal with a brilliant half-century. He stayed unbeaten at 51 while his opening partner Matthew Wade struck 33 runs.
Australia took only 21 overs to reach the target as the match finished on Day 3.
