On This Day In 2020: On January 29, 2020, Rohit Sharma exhibited sensational batting to guide India to a memorable win against New Zealand in the third T20I. At the Seddon Park in Hamilton, after both the teams tied at 179, they played a Super Over to decide the game.
With nine runs to score off the final over, the Kiwis ended up matching India’s first-innings total. After excelling with the bat in the first innings, Rohit once again showcased exceptional performance in the Super Over to earn a remarkable win for the visitors. Batting first, India got off to a flying start, thanks to a solid opening partnership of 89 between Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul. While Rahul was dismissed at 27 runs off 19 deliveries, Rohit continued his sublime batting before losing his wicket to Hamish Bennett in the 11th over.
Rohit Sharma went back to the dressing room after a fine knock of 65 off 40 balls. Rohit’s knock comprised six boundaries and three sixes. The then India skipper Virat Kohli scored a quickfire 38 off 27 deliveries to take India past a 170-run total. Hamish Bennett emerged as New Zealand’s best bowler with three scalps.
During the run chase, the then New Zealand captain Kane Williamson pulled off a stunning half-century. He hit eight boundaries and six maximums for his 48-ball 95 runs.
Despite Kane Williamson’s magnificent batting, New Zealand failed to score the winning runs in 20 overs. Shardul Thakur and Mohammad Shami bagged two wickets each for India. The Kiwis ended up matching India’s total of 179 in 20 overs, thus requiring a Super Over to separate the two sides.
