On This Day In 2021: The Indian cricket team pulled off an epic win on this day (January 19) in 2021. India got the better of Australia by three wickets to win the fourth Test at Gabba in Brisbane. With the victory, India also broke Australia’s 32-year undefeated streak at the venue.
Chasing a target of 328, the visitors clinched a memorable win at the loss of seven wickets. It’s also the fifth-highest successful chase in Australia. The record for the highest successful chase on Australian soil is held by South Africa when they scored 414 at Perth in 2008.

Marnus Labuschagne played a solid knock of 108 to give Australia an upper hand. Tim Paine, the then-Australia skipper, also chipped in with a vital 50, and the hosts posted 369 in the first innings. Shardul Thakur, T Natarajan and Washington Sundar claimed three wickets each for India in the first innings.
India, in response, scored 336. Shardul Thakur and Washington Sundar excelled with the bat as well, each scoring a half-century. Josh Hazlewood claimed a fifer.
In the second innings, Mohammed Siraj stole the limelight registering a five-wicket haul. Thanks to Siraj and Shardul Thakur’s majestic bowling, Australia failed to breach the 300-run mark in the second innings. Steven Smith scored a half-century as Australia reached 294, setting a target of 328 for the visitors.
India did not get a good start, with Rohit Sharma dismissed for just seven runs. Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara weathered the storm, each adding a half-century. The scintillating run chase went right down the wire with wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, eventually, emerging as India’s architect in victory.
Rishabh Pant remained unbeaten on 89 to guide India to an incredible three-wicket win in Brisbane. Pant’s valiant, 138-ball knock comprised nine boundaries and a maximum.
