Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming has said that they made some miscalculations at the IPL 2025 mega auction, which has led to a dismal campaign, admitting that other teams did far better than them at the crucial auction last year, and CSK misfired.
The loss to the Sunrisers Hyderabad on Saturday was Chennai’s second straight defeat as the former won by five wickets.
It was Chennai’s fourth successive defeat at the Chepauk, and it is just the second such instance after they lost the last two games of IPL 2028 and the first two in IPL 2010.
“It is hard to say we got it (auction) completely right with the performances that we have had. So we have been looking over that in detail, just around our style of play. Also, looking at how the game is evolving,” Fleming said while speaking after the match.
“And it is not easy. And that is why we are proud of our record today. We have been able to be consistent for so long, and it doesn’t take much for it to go another way. Other teams have got better, and that is the point of the auction,” Fleming added.
Chennai haven’t been able to find any consistent batter this season, and skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad‘s campaign-ending injury has made it worse.
“It is also not perfect science. The auction is a very fluid beast. It’s like buying [for] 25 hours and seeing it come away at the end of it, mentally and sometimes physically exhausted,” Fleming said.
“A couple of key injuries, just a bit of a lack of form. And we have just struggled really to nail a game plan. We’ve chopped and changed too much. I think it was trying to look for something that perhaps we felt wasn’t there,” Fleming added.
Meanwhile, a distraught MS Dhoni has expressed his helplessness at Chennai’s extended poor run in IPL 2025 and said that it is difficult for a franchise to get the desired result when four players lose form at the same time.
CSK play their next game against the Punjab Kings on April 30 at home.
