Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey gave a bold response when asked if he would follow Tim Paine’s style when engaging with Indian cricketers. India and Australia are set to square off in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy on November 22. Ahead of the series, Carey was interviewed by Cricket Australia where he was asked about getting involved in conversations with his opponents during the epic five-match Test battle. Carey responded by saying, “I like to say our bowlers do all the talking.” He further said, “They’re a pretty skilful group.” Cricket Australia have now shared the clip on X (formerly Twitter). “Tim Paine’s stump-mic banter was a highlight of India’s last visit, so will Alex Carey be following suit this summer?” the post read.

Alex Carey initially said he would consider getting involved in conversations with Team India in the upcoming Tests. However, the wicketkeeper-batter explained that he mostly focused on the game rather than what was happening around him. “I’ll have conversations,” he said. “Nah, normally when I’m batting, I’m pretty much in my box. And don’t go too far away from that,” he added. Carey then claimed his batting approach also transitioned into his keeping style. “And when I am keeping it’s normally the same,” the wicketkeeper said.

During the same interview, Alex Carey also discussed his bond with wicketkeeping partner Josh Inglis. “We’ve spent lots of time together. Josh (Inglis) and I, all the way back from the NPS (National Performance Squad) days, and spent lots of time on tour together. So yeah, he’ll join the squad. Lots of energy, batting beautifully as well,” he added. “(Andre) Borovec our fielding coach will join as well, so I think in a couple of days’ time we’ll have everyone here. And no doubt we’ll catch together throughout the summer for sure,” Carey concluded.

The banter from Australia ex-wicketkeeper Tim Paine was a major highlight during the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. India ultimately had the last laugh as they overturned a shocking defeat in Adelaide to win the series 2-1. After getting dismissed for 36 in the second innings of the opening Test, India secured an eight-wicket victory at Sydney followed by a historic win at The Gabba on their last visit to Australia.

India’s opening game against Australia in the 2024/25 Border Gavaskar Trophy will take place at the Optus Stadium in Perth. India will hope to kick off the series on a winning note as they eye a third-consecutive final in the ICC World Test Championship.
