India will face England in the first T20I of the five-match series on Wednesday (January 22). The T20I series opener is scheduled to take place at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Indian players attended the first practice session at the iconic stadium on January 19. Star fast bowler Arshdeep Singh, who will lead India’s bowling attack in the home series against Jos Buttler & Co., joined the team’s camp on Sunday night and was seen taking part in the practice session on Monday.

During the practice session, India’s T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav, was seen chatting with him in Bangla. In a video shared by BCCI on its social media handles on Tuesday, Surya can be heard saying, “Jaise ye paaji ko dekh kar yaad aata hai. Paaji bhalo? Bhalo paaji?” to which Arshdeep replied, “Bhalo achi.”Impressed by Arshdeep’s Bangla, Surya then added, “Paaji bhi seekh gaye hai yaha par reh kar.”

Here’s a look:

Arshdeep, who made his international debut for India in July 2022 against England, will be a key player for the hosts in the upcoming five T20Is. During the home series, the left-arm pacer will have a chance to break multiple bowling records. If Arshdeep manages to take two wickets in the series opener, then he will break Yuzvendra Chahal’s record of 96 wickets in 80 matches and become India’s most successful bowler in the shortest format of the game.

If Arshdeep picks up at least five wickets, then he will become the first Indian bowler to take 100 wickets in T20Is, and it will also help him become the fastest fast bowler in the world to complete a century of wickets in the shortest format of the game.

As of now, the record of being the fastest pacer to take 100 T20I wickets is in the name of Pakistan’s Haris Rauf. Rauf picked up his 100th wicket in the 71st T20I match. On the other hand, Arshdeep has only played 60 matches so far and has 95 wickets to his name.

Arshdeep was India’s best bowler in T20Is last year. He finished as the leading wicket-taker in the T20 World Cup 2024 and helped Rohit Sharma’s side win the title.
