Pakistan created an unwanted record on Thursday, February 27, by becoming the first host nation in ICC Champions Trophy history to exit the tournament without winning a single match. The Mohammad Rizwan-led side suffered a shocking defeat by 60 runs against New Zealand in the tournament opener played at National Stadium in Karachi on February 19, and in the second Group A match played at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on February 23, India hammered them by 6 wickets after chasing down the target of 242 runs in 42.3 overs.

The Pakistani team wanted to end the tournament with a win on Thursday, February 27, but the plan flopped after the match against Bangladesh at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium was called off due to rain.

It’s the first time in history that a host nation of the Champions Trophy failed to win any match in the tournament. In the 2000 edition, Kenya also failed to win any match despite being the host of the Champions Trophy, but at that time the Kenya team played in the playoff stage, which took place between the six lower-ranked teams before the main tournament was kicked off.

Performance of host nation in Champions Trophy

YEAR HOST NATION FINAL RESULT OF HOST NATION
1998 Bangladesh Not Qualified
2000 Kenya Playoff Stage (0/1)
2002 Sri Lanka Champions (Shared with India)
2004 England Finalists
2006 India Group Stage (1/3)
2009 South Africa Group Stage (1/3)
2013 England & Wales Finalists
2017 England & Wales Semifinalists
2025 Pakistan & UAE Group Stage (0/3)

The Champions Trophy 2025 was the first major ICC tournament organised in Pakistan after they co-hosted the 1996 ODI World Cup with India and Sri Lanka.

In the past, only one host nation—Sri Lanka in 2002—has ever managed to win the Champions Trophy title.

Pakistan entered the Champions Trophy as defending champions, but its title defence came to an end within six days after back-to-back defeats.

Only one team has ever managed to defend its Champions Trophy title. The feat was achieved by the Australian team, which, under the leadership of Ricky Ponting, won its first Champions Trophy title in 2006 and then successfully defended it three years later by getting the better of New Zealand in the 2009 edition final played at SuperSport Park in Centurion.

India and New Zealand have won two matches played so far in Group A, and with 4 points each, they have booked their place in the semifinals of the Champions Trophy 2025. India’s semifinal match is scheduled to take place in Dubai on Tuesday, March 2, and New Zealand will play at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on March 3. The final match is set to be played on Sunday, March 9.
