India’s proud streak of not losing a home test series since 2012 came to an abrupt end in a humiliating 2-0 defeat by New Zealand, who exposed cracks in the hosts’ vaunted batting line-up by tormenting them with pace and then spin.

While spinner Mitchell Santner took six wickets for a match haul of 13 to spell doom on a turning pitch, the hosts were left in tatters by New Zealand’s pace bowlers in overcast conditions in the series opener at Bengaluru.

Pakistan cricketer Ahmed Shehzad trolled India after their historic defeat to New Zealand in the second Test and subsquently losing a home series.

“New Zealand have come to India and thrashed them as if they had the right to do so, beating them like kids and walking away. They’ve pulled a prank on India. People are now saying, ‘Kagaz ke sher, aur ghar mein dher‘ (Tigers on paper, crumbled at home),” Shehzad was quoted as saying on his YouTube channel

“When India were bowled out for 46 runs (in the first Test), Rohit Sharma had said, ‘Everyone has a bad day.’ And we accept that. Absolutely fair. But in this Test match too, the way you’ve played cricket, it seems like you’ve become complacent. Rohit Sharma says that they don’t believe in unnecessary talk, but that spirit was missing in the last two Tests. These two matches have been played in a way that makes it seem like schoolboys were playing,” Shehzad added.

India continue to top the World Test Championship standings despite the two defeats but will be less confident about a spot in next year’s final after their first series loss on home soil since falling to England in 2012.

Their run of 18 successive home series wins since that 2-1 humbling was snapped by the inspired Black Caps, who were by far the better side and will target a clean sweep heading to the finale in Mumbai from Friday.
